Blog and RSS Platforms and Software

A "platform" is the software or online service that you use to create and maintain a blog or RSS feed. Most blogging software creates an RSS feed, but sometimes you aren't able to edit the content. You can always pick up FeedForAll and do it that way, if your software or host won't let you edit your feed content to your liking.

Blog hosting sites are popping up like wildfire, so I doubt this list will stay current for very long. I'll add to it as quickly as I hear about new sites and software. If you know of something that should be included, email me

I should also mention that if your web hosting company happens to use "cPanel" as your control center, and you have "fantastico" enabled, you already have versions of WordPress and pMachine available. You can install and configure either with a few mouse clicks.

I'm running a blog on this site using WordPress. Click here to get an idea how the layout looks.

If you want total control over you blog and RSS feed, you should probably go with a "standalone" package hosted on your own site. If you want quick set-up and ease of use, go with a blogging host site. As discussed in the book, opinions differ as to which is more advantageous, from the standpoint of getting the most mileage out of your links and page rank.

Blog Creation and Hosting Sites
(most also create an RSS Feed)

  • Big Blog Tool - gaining popularity. Their service will set you back a whopping 15 bucks a year, last I checked.

  • Blogger.Com - perhaps the most popular standalone free blog creator and host. Owned by Google.

  • Blog Harbor - another popular standalone blogging site with tons of extra features, for a modest monthly fee.

  • Type Pad - online blog platform using MoveableType. Fees range from $5 to $15 per month. Chocked full of features, and tons of templates available.

  • Web Crimson - offers features similar to Blogger.com. I find it strange that their "news" hasn't been updated in nearly three years ...

Stand Alone Blogging Software
(most also create an RSS Feed)

  • bBlog - Free, open-source blogging platform. I haven't used it live, but lots of people like it. I tried the demo recently and it looks simple and elegant.

  • Moveable Type - The "gold standard", in the opinion of many, and it's free. Has a huge manual.

  • pMachine - A relative newcomer, and my personal favorite. Includes an RSS parser. Free as of 2005.

  • WordPress - Has been and continues to be very popular. It's free. If your cPanel has "fantastico" enabled, you can just click to install on your site.

RSS Software
(Create Your Own Feed)

  • Feed For All - Creates your RSS feed for you, validates your code to XML 2.0 Standard, spell checks, and much, much more. Free trial, and very modestly priced.

RSS Parsers
(add content to your website)

  • CARP - Both free and low-cost versions available, but you better know some HTML, javascript, and PHP to get it configured. Being patient doesn't hurt, either. I have it running on this website. Click the links on the index page.

  • RSS Equalizer - Very versatile and easy to use. Well documented, and an active users forum. I use it on a couple of my sites. Here's an example.
